3 wonderful Christmas pop-up events in London and why they worked

13 Oct 16 By: Lene McGuinness

Christmas pop-up events are fast becoming a Christmas tradition in London. From seasonal markets, festive bars and exciting dining events, pop-ups are popular with guests and event planners alike. In this blog we take a look at five successful pop-up events in London and why they’ve worked.

Once Upon a Time

What is it?

Once Upon a Time Presents, the Little Treasured Toy Shop, is a ‘multi-sensory’ dining experience that includes theatrical performances, which takes place in the heart of Mayfair in central London. Aimed at the corporate Christmas party market, the event aims to delight and surprise guests.

Why did it work?

The combination of dining and theatre has a particular Christmas feel about it. Its exclusive location in Mayfair will give the event a luxurious edge and offers the options of shared and bespoke parties makes the event open to groups of different sizes. One of the reasons behind the popularity of pop-up events is an air of mystery and Once Upon a Time delivers this in abundance. On their website, they state the "Once Upon a Time concept will remain a mystery until you walk through our doors.” Once Upon a Time Presents the ‘Little Treasured Toy Shop” is back for the 2016/2017 season.

The Lodge

What is it?

Celebrity chef and pop-up event extraordinaire Jimmy Garcia created The Lodge last year in Clapham North. Described as an immersive experience, The Lodge brings a bit of the French Alps to South West London.

Why did it work?

The Lodge’s success is down to many aspects. One of the key ingredients to a pop-up event is exclusivity. Behind the small door and unassuming brick facade is a high-end space, designed to look like an après lodge perched high in the Alps. The venue is small, and while booking is not essential it is recommended if you want a table.  Its location is also a factor, Clapham is full of young professions with disposable income, who are highly likely to ski.  And of course, you cannot have a successful pop-up dining event without a well-sourced and delicious menu that fits the theme. The Lodge returns to Clapham in 2016. Cheese fondue anyone?

The Tasting Room

What is it?

The Tasting Room is a temporary bar and restaurant in Broadgate next to Liverpool Street station. Part of Broadgate’s Ice Rink, the Tasting Room has had many incarnations in the past, including a barbeque shack. It returns in 2016 as an artisan bar and kitchen.

Why did it work?

In an area filled with bars and restaurants, how does this little pop-up compete? One of its biggest selling points is novelty. The Tasting Room is different, little quirky and changes each season. When creating a pop-up event never underestimate how novelty will help create a buzz around the event and help get people through the doors. The bar and restaurant also offer a good menu of seasonal fare such as mulled cider and wine as well as popular winter bites.
